The Training Purpose
This training is designed to assist primary care providers and their staff who see children and youth to address and understand the obesity epidemic so that they can work with patients and their families in terms of prevention, assessment, management and healthy life style choices. It offers very practical strategies and interventions that can be implemented in private practice and clinic settings.

This training is designed to assist those who work with children and youth in the community in child care, preschool, school, after school programs, youth development and community based programs to understand obesity, and develop strategies to increase physical activity, healthy eating and healthier environments. It offers practical tools, skills and interventions that you can use at your work site.

Training Themes

  • Develop a science –based understanding that is easy to understand

  • Learn why physicians and community providers working with children and youth benefit from working together
  • Develop practical skills and interventions to use at your work setting

Tracks
The training is divided into tracks: Nutrition, Physical Activity, Community and Family, and Cutting Edge. Participants can choose to follow one track that meets their needs and interests, or mix and match as they choose. We have gathered together a dynamic group of presenters.

Bay Area Regional Train the Trainer Program
This is two session program requires special registration on the registration form. It is designed for those who work at health plans, CHDP, large clinics, medical groups/independent practitioner associations, hospital based clinics who agree to train their providers to use the tool kit. The Morning
The training begins with an opportunity to network and visit exhibitors followed by a welcome and quick orientation to the day’s program.

The Teaching Breakfast demonstrates education and counseling strategies The Cutting Edge Track related to healthy eating and offers a delicious healthy meal.

There will be short stretches and physical activity breaks between sessions.

The Plenary, Honey We Blew Up the Kids, frames the issues looking at the science and clinical concerns as well as the issues related to the built environment

Breakout Session #1
The first breakout session offers four choices:

The Nutrition Track looks at the protective factors of breastfeeding and misinterpretation of infant behaviors that interfere with breastfeeding and can lead to overfeeding.

The Physical Activity Track explores energy expenditure and how this relates to weight and how the body works.

The Community and Family Track focuses on cultural influences related to BMI, assessment, risk, prevalence, treatment, chronic illness, and co-morbidities and how these issues differ across populations.

The Cutting Edge Track addresses prenatal influences and weight gain in pregnancy and their relation to childhood obesity.

Lunch
Enjoy a delicious sit down lunch. Lunch is a time to network and talk to individuals with similar interests and concerns. You will be able to choose an affinity group facilitated by a task force member that helps you think through the morning program, your own interests and experiences.

Breakout Session #2

The Nutrition Track looks at working with diverse populations in the clinical setting, and how understanding and appreciating different food choices and attitudes help you craft individualized patient interventions.

The Physical Activity Track explores the science of exercise as well as resources and how both help you work with individuals in a variety of settings.

The Community and Family Track focuses on adverse childhood experiences and the impact on health and risk, neurobiology, and the social determinants of health including how to better understand individuals and interventions to help them reduce stress.

The Cutting Edge Track addresses some of the latest research in Motivational Interviewing and how you can use it in your work in clinical and non-clinical environments.

Breakout Session #3

There is no Nutrition Track in Breakout Session #3. There are 2 Physical Activity Tracks

The Physical Activity Track looks at practical, workable hands on interventions that can be used in school settings and after school programs.

The Physical Activity Track explores working with diverse populations, engaging, and interesting children, youth, and care givers to participate in physical activities.

The Community and Family Track focuses on youth and adolescent challenges related to food, eating, nutrition, physical activity and healthier lifestyle.

The Cutting Edge Track addresses a workable, evidence based approach to stress reduction that is an important intervention tool in addressing obesity.

A healthy afternoon snack is available to keep up your energy during the last two breakout sessions.

Breakout Session #4

There are two Community and Family track presentations in Breakout Section #4.

The Nutrition Track looks at working with parents and caregivers around making food choices, including shopping tips, and cultural influences.

The Physical Activity Track explores the ins and outs of the SPARK Preschool Curriculum, how to use it and more by a SPARK trainer. This session is designed for those who work with young children.

The Community and Family Track focuses on beliefs about size, weight, and health and how these differ across populations and how to use to engage families in making healthier choices about increasing physical activity, and trying healthier food options, and other lifestyle choices.

The Community and Family Track introduces you to Shape-Up San Francisco’s free interventions and how to use them in clinical, community, school, preschool, recreation and after school settings.

The Cutting Edge Track offers you innovative brief interventions to be used in private practice and clinic setting to address risk, overweight, and obesity, as well as lifestyle choices related to physical activity and healthier food choices.

Closing Session: Putting it all to Use; Making Sense Out of What You Learned Today

There are some incentives for staying for the final mini plenary. These include raffle prizes.

All content sessions must be attended to receive a CME or CEU certificate in exchange for a completed Evaluation Form.
