CAMF Train the Trainer

Pediatric Obesity: Train the Trainer Workshop

In 2008 the California Medical Association Foundation (CMAF) released three toolkits to assist medical providers with addressing obesity in primary care settings:

  • Child and Adolescent Obesity Provider Toolkit
  • Adult Obesity Provider Toolkit
  • Pre/Post Bariatric Surgery Provider Toolkit

This interactive session is designed to assist allied licensed and health professionals (health educators, registered dieticians, nutritionists, nurses, etc.) to implement the Child and Adolescent Obesity Provider Toolkit. Three key skill sets relating to childhood obesity will be reviewed and the training materials will be showcased. Attendees will learn how to:

  • Educate staff and providers on how to chart BMI percentiles, conduct brief motivational interviewing and how to use state, county and local pediatric community resources.
  • Obtain ready-to-use training tools and office-centered techniques for the assessment and counseling of pediatric overweight and obesity.
  • Use customized provider and patient education resources on nutrition, physical activity and obesity.

Background: Because of the widespread demand for training on basic provider skills related to pediatric obesity, this training curriculum was developed by the Department of Health Care Services in collaboration with the California Medical Association Foundation (CMAF), Medi-Cal Managed Care Health Plans and Child Health and Disability Prevention Program (CHDP) providers.  It is designed for providers and allied health professionals (health educators, registered dieticians, nutritionists, nurses, etc.) to easily use for training provider office staff in a wide variety of settings.  This collaborative workshop builds upon the CMAF’s Child and Adolescent Obesity Provider toolkit to assist medical providers with addressing pediatric obesity in primary care settings.  It also includes additional supportive materials.

The curriculum is divided into three sections. Each section is designed as a 45 minute training or all three sections can be presented simultaneously in one three-hour training. Each section references the relevant toolkit pages, presents the important points that need to be addressed by the trainer and supplies websites for references and downloadable resources. The key curriculum sections are:

  • BMI Screening, including proper weighing and measuring techniques
  • Counseling
  • Clinical Follow-up and Resources

Those attending this training should have:

  • Prior experience and expertise in training either by education and/or background.  This is not a course on how to train.
  • Enhanced awareness of the multifactorial dimensions of childhood obesity. This is not a course about the causes of the childhood obesity problem.
  • Basic understanding of some of the medical problems associated with obesity in children. Background in child health is important.
  • Responsibility for training medical providers either as part of current or future scope of work.
  • Availability to provide follow-up support for providers and office staff.

The California Medical Society Foundation Child and Adolescent Obesity Provider Tool Kit Train the Trainer Program is now closed to further registration.
